Let me make it clear: yes I'm a conservative, yes I'm a registered Republican, and yes I would like to see the Republicans back in the majority again in Congress (and God willing, the White House in 2012). That being said, I don't see how the Republican Party can prove to me that they are the viable option to oppose the ruling statist Democrat majority that controls both houses of Congress, the White House, and if we don't do anything about it, our lives.
In the twelve years that the GOP held Congress (six of which complemented a Republican White House), the Republicans in Congress and the Bush White House focused too much on two unconstitutional wars and not enough on the costs that Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as friendships with rogue nations, leaving them wide open for attacks from Democrats who accused them of not caring about the economy and workers. The Democrats were right when they accused the GOP of this: that the party of restricted spending and small government began spending like socialists. However, the Democrats weren't the option because their solution to socialism-lite, was hardline socialism.
So here we are in 2009. The Democratic controlled Congress has a 66% disapproval rating. But do the Republicans have to offer besides saying that they're not Democrats? The GOP needs to take a lesson from one of their own: Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). Rep. Paul is a conservative in its purest definition: anti-war, anti-state, pro-liberty. Talk about reducing spending, talk about cutting costs, but also start talking about eliminating unnecessary government programs, sharply reducing the size of government, which are harming our economy. Talk economic sense, and then get the job done.
Then, I will place my complete trust with the Republican Party again. (Well, maybe not. But it'll make me feel better about them.)
